Apple used its Wednesday “Surprise and Shine” event to lay out its AI strategy under new CEO John Ternus, who succeeded Tim Cook as Cook moves into the role of executive chairman. Ternus argued that no device is better positioned to serve as an “intelligent personal hub” for AI than the iPhone, citing its processing power, display, cameras, connectivity, and integration with other Apple devices and services. He also emphasized that Apple prioritizes data privacy more than competitors, noting that Apple Intelligence runs on-device whenever possible rather than relying on collecting and storing user data externally.
Among the announcements was Apple Reference Image, a new authentication feature for the iPhone 18 Pro that captures signed sensor data when a photo is taken, which Apple’s Private Cloud Compute service converts into an unalterable reference version stored in the Photos app. The feature allows later versions of an image to be compared against this reference to detect alterations, and Apple said it is opening APIs for developers while also supporting the SynthID standard for identifying AI-generated or altered images. The iPhone 18 Pro also received a major camera upgrade, including a variable-aperture 48-megapixel main camera built using six laser-cut blades and a custom lens system.
